COLOUR DRENCHING - a trend worth doing?

It is everywhere at the minute! For those who don’t know it is the idea of completely saturating a room in one colour, this includes the ceiling. Now don’t get me wrong this can be an incredibly impactful way to make a statement however is it for you and your home?

Let’s run through a few pros and cons.

PROS

  • Can make a room feel bigger than it is ,

  • Colour drenching can become the focal point of the room or it can actually create space for another focal point as the architectual details become seamless,

  • It can create a defined mood within the space - usually very calming depending on the colour choice,

  • It can help exaggerate the lighting (natural or artificial).

Examples of successful colour drenching in my opinion.

Cons

  • There is less room to make a mistake regarding the tone of the colour and how it interacts with other finishes in the room.

  • In some cases colour blocking can make the space feel larger but in other cases, it can close the space in. This is to do with the colour selected, if the ceilings are already low and there aren’t many architectural details or lighting.

  • It can make the space feel unbalanced is the spaces don’t have other components to create visual balance.

If you are considering colour drenching a space, I would suggest thinking through what your reasons are for doing so. Although this trend can create stunning spaces you need to carefully consider your reasoning for wanting to implement it. Using a trend like colour drenching should help add to the home you’re trying to create so I would encourage you to think about the following questions before moving forward;

1/ What is the colour palette I would be working with if I was to colour drench a space? How would the colours work together across the space?

2/ What is the lighting like in the space?

3/ Do I have architectural details I would like to hide or simplify?

4/ Is this space in need of a calming feeling?

5/ Does the space have enough of the other design elements (pattern, texture, shape, line, colour) to create balance in the end?

And hopefully by answering these questions you should be able to identify whether colour drenching is a good idea for your space or not.

Keep Creating, Keep Dreaming.
