Get a Concept Gurl!!

Here is a comparison for you - When you are going to a wedding, you start thinking about what you are going to wear. You make considerations on all the practical things like the venue, the time of year, and whether will you be doing lots of dancing, then you take a look at the invitation and you realise its a coastal beach wedding so you understand that there will be a certain look and feel that the bride and groom are trying to create. Automatically you aren’t going to wear that long sleeve navy velvet ballgown that you bought last season! The wedding has set the tone and given you direction for the way you are going to present yourself. Now of course there will still be a level of interpretation that comes with the theme. Someone might wear a Maxi dress, someone might wear a skirt and top co- ord, some people might think blue is more on theme where as other might go for a neutral look. The thing is that because everyone is working too that overall aesthetic even though the outfits are slightly different they all look great together in all the photos and that is because everyone is talking to the theme/style.

Now take this theory across to your renovation - how can you possibly have picked the correct outfit if you didn’t know what the bride and groom were hoping to achieve, you couldn’t. I think you get what I am saying now….. if the renovation doesn’t have the look, style, or feel that you’re aiming to create, you simply can’t create anything! Developing the concept is 100% the absolute way to get your reno RIGHT! Without it you’re going to have a house that looks unconsidered, it makes decision making HARD, and you will become distracted and off track.

I completely understand that lots of people find this process really difficult because it means making conceptual decisions and not just copying a kitchen or home you’ve seen on Pinterest and it means really working out what you need and want, but I am always here to help with that process and I love working with clients to get this stage right. What I also find is that with a clear vision, people are more inclined to be creative and bold with things they really love as they understand how it will work within the space.

Also don’t be scared in thinking that concept means money - what it can also mean is a clear understanding of what you want to spend your money on and why! And it actually will save you money as you won’t end up making poor choices based off overwhelm.

In the coming weeks, I will be uploading an e-book that walks you through the steps to come up with a foolproof design concept. Whether that’s for a bedroom revamp, a kitchen renovation or a new build. I believe that everyone deserves to have a house that reflects them and my hope is that this e-book will allow more people this opportunity.
