How to Choose Color Schemes for your exterior

Discover expert tips on creating a color schemes for your home to enhance their charm and character.

Choosing the right colour scheme for your home can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. With a few clear steps and some expert guidance, you can create a beautiful, cohesive palette with ease. Here’s how to simplify the process and make colour selection a breeze:

1. Understand Your Home's Style or Era

When selecting a colour scheme, it's essential to consider the architectural style or era of your home, especially if you’re working with an older or historical home. Explore similar homes—whether in person or online—for colour inspiration. Pay close attention to details like window, roof, fascia, gutter, and eave colours. This will help you visualise complementary combinations that can be applied to your own home.

2. Conduct Thorough Research

Take time to explore various colour combinations that complement the style of your home. Browse through different schemes—not just the ones you think you’ll like at first glance. This broadens your perspective and helps refine your choices, making it easier to identify the perfect colours for your space.

3. Create a Balanced Three-Colour Scheme

For a timeless, cohesive look, aim for a three-colour scheme. This should include:

  • A main neutral for your walls

  • A lighter or darker neutral for the woodwork (such as windows and gutters)

  • An accent colour that adds contrast and vibrancy

This approach creates depth and visual interest without overwhelming the facade. While larger, more intricate schemes work well for historic homes with detailed features, a three-colour palette suits most modern exteriors and is ideal for simplicity and longevity.

4. Complement Existing Materials

If your home features brick or other raw materials, consider working with the tones already present. These natural hues provide a foundation for your colour palette. Choose shades that complement or subtly contrast with these materials to ensure a harmonious and balanced exterior.

As shown below, the image to the left shows the way in which the butter, fascia, windows and door are all in a colour that matches or complements the timber cladding, as opposed to the image on the left where the colours chosen for the windows, eaves and aluminium contrast to the beautiful timber. Both look phenomenal but are very different in style.

Once you’ve narrowed down your colour scheme using one of these methods, it’s time to focus on selecting the perfect shades. With fewer options to choose from, you can confidently hone in on the right tones that will bring your vision to life.
