Can you mix the colours of your timbers in your home?

What a contentious question we have here - the idea of mixing timber for some people is a complete no-no but generally that is because they can figure out how to do it to make it look nice.

We don’t really need to over complicate it, to be honest, but depending on the look you’re after there is a few ways to do it effectively.

The first step is to identify the main timber feature within your space - a lot of the time this will be the floor. Once you have identified this component you can decide which ways you want to take the other timber elements.

Here are a few ways you could do it.

1/ Mix your timber colours but keep them in the same colour temperature.

This means you can mix your timber colours but keep them all in cool (grey, white, green) undertones or warm (yellow, pinks, oranges, reds) undertones. This creates an interesting play of timber without the clash of undertones.

2/ Keep the colour the same but vary the tone.

This would mean you are looking to use the same timber but it would have different stains to help create variations of lightness and darkness. This can be very effective in a Scandi-style or coastal-style home.

3/ Use the same timber across all of the timber elements.

This can work especially well in more minimal and modern style homes. My biggest concern with this is it leaves very little room for error when it comes to selecting any timber item, if you decide to go down this road pick a timber that is relatively easy to find furniture in or source for custom pieces. If you decide to go for this look it is also important to think about the grain in the timber you are using and whether you would like it all to be consistant or if the grain is going to bring in variation.

As you can see there are multiple ways to make timber work within your space and the key to navigating the best way to mix your timbers is to understand your style and vision before you start. Certain styles prefer certain combinations of timbers so be mindful of this and you will be able to create your desired space.
