Using the Same Colour Everywhere!

In my previous blog post, I mentioned a trend that seems to be making its way into 2023: painting rooms and space in ONE colour.

For many people I can actually see their reaction to this because using colour on mass can be frightening - however as we discuss this trend remember you don’t have to use bright high-energy colours to make this work, the theory can apply to neutrals and whites.

So why would we even consider doing this? Well, there are a few reasons…….

1/ It helps your focus move to the more interesting features of the room. Our eye naturally gets pulled to the biggest or most prominent colour. If you are using a grey, neutral or light colour across an entire space (ceilings, cornice, skirting, architraves and walls) you are actually saturating the space, making it less impactful. It’s also a great way to “hide” architectural details that you don’t love. The idea then is to place furniture, décor and artwork that you love into this room as your eye will be drawn to the elements that have colour, texture, shape and pattern.

2/ Using the same colour can create a cocoon feeling. Using colour in spaces can be the easiest way to create a mood in a room. In spaces such as a bedroom you might want that safe comforting feeling and using the same colour across all the painted surfaces creates an instance bubble. If you were to do this I would steer clear of the high chroma colours and look at the low chroma, muted colours that bring soft and calm energy.

3/ Make a huge space feel manageable. We idealise the idea of big spaces, but sometimes they are actually unmanageable and can make you feel uncomfortable due to the disproportionate scale. You don’t have to use a dark colour to help minimise the space, by simply using the same colour across the room allows the proportions to equalise visually.

4/ And sometimes we just want to make a bloody statement. As you can imagine if you apply this idea to a room and paint it in a dark moody colour, a bright red or a hot pink you are going to make a statement. Where could you use this idea - it could look great in an office where the cabinetry is also the same colour, a small powder room, or a studio space used for creating. These are just some ideas but you can certainly apply this to any space that your feel needs an extra bit of WOW factor.
